Learning to Think Differently

“Our lives move in the direction of our strongest thoughts.” Craig Groeschel

“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”(Philippians 4:8)

Our thoughts are always taking us somewhere. They are often even taking us places that we do not want to go. That is why the Apostle Paul said that we must “take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” (2 Corinthians 10:5)

The results of not taking our thoughts captive are many. We can end up in improper relationships. We can give way to worry and anxiety. We can allow guilt from the past to occupy our thoughts. We can allow an offense to destroy friendships. Our thoughts can lead us into darkness or into light.

One of the keys to shifting the way that we think is a spiritual transformation. Our lives are “transformed by the renewing of our minds.” (Romans 12:2) Our minds are renewed by applying the Word of God and spiritual principles to thoughts.

If you find yourself struggling with thinking about negative things, worry, impure thoughts, unforgiveness, or anything else, I encourage you to apply God’s Word to your situation. A daily application of God’s promises will begin to shift your thinking. It can’t be a, “I tried that once and it didn’t work,” type of process.

It takes us years to get screwed up in our thinking. It may take a while to get us thinking in a different way. God’s Word is living and active and has the power to renew our minds. It is up to us, though, to pick it up, read it, and ask the Holy Spirit to apply it in our lives!

Our thought patterns can be very strong. That is why they do not change easily. Many people try different ways to shift their minds with varied results. The Word of God is a tried and true method that has been changing people’s lives for thousands of years.

What area of your thought life do you struggle with the most? What is one thing that you could to change in that area?
