“Mary responded, “I am the Lord’s servant, and I am willing to accept whatever he wants. May everything you have said come true.” And then the angel left.”

This is the time of year when most people begin thinking about the New Year. It is always nice to turn the page on our calendar and get a fresh start. I now that I’m ready to flip the page! What will the new year hold for you? No matter what our 2022 was like, we all get a chance to have a new beginning in 2023.

I wonder what would happen if we all adopted Mary’s attitude for coming year? What might God be able to do in our lives, our families, our finances, our relationships, if we made Mary’s words our prayer? First of all, she acknowledges that she is “the Lord’s servant.” We all are going to serve something or somebody. Anybody remember Bob Dylan’s hit song, “Gotta Serve Somebody?” Why don’t we make sure that we are serving the right Person in 2023?

Mary also willingly acknowledges her willingness to submit her will to God. I find that most of my problems in life come from trying to assert my will. Lining our will up with God’s will is a sure way to get the new year started on the right foot. This goes back to Mary’s confession that she is the “Lord’s servant.” A servant always has to put their master’s interests first. The servant’s will is always submitted to the master’s will.

The last thing that Mary said was, “May everything you have said come true.” Another translation renders this verse, “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Trusting in God’s Word and letting it do its work in our lives is a great way to begin a new year. If you are not already in the habit of spending time in the Bible everyday, why not start now? Five minutes in God’s Word, every day, will change your life. Why not start a good, new habit for 2021?

What would it mean for you to adopt Mary’s attitude as your own?
