A Season of Change- Your Financial World

Pile of Money

What are your financial goals for 2013? Whether we like to admit it or not money plays a huge role in our lives. Financial problems are one of the leading causes of marital problems. How many cases of depression can be traced to money issues? Directly or indirectly, money controls much of life.

The average credit card debt per household in the United States is almost $16,000. Throw in a car payment or two and a mortgage and it is easy to see that the average American is working to just make their monthly payments on their debts. Most of us don’t have much money left over after we pay all of our bills.

As we move into 2013, I propose that you make a conscious choice to start getting out of debt. It is easy to look at that mountain and say, “There is no way. That mountain of debt is too big!” The key to climbing the mountain is by taking small steps. What can you work towards paying off in 2013? Why not focus on one outstanding debt and work on paying it off in the next year? This is the way that you make progress and start generating some momentum. Even if you can only pay off one bill in 2013, that is huge progress! It takes people years to get into debt. It will probably take a few years to get out of debt.

I’d like to make one last suggestion in regards to financial goals in 2013. Why don’t you give some of your money away? I know that sounds crazy but the richest people in the world are the most generous. “Well, of course. They are rich! They can afford to be generous.” The fact is, most of those people were generous before they ever became rich. If you are a part of a local church, you should be giving regularly to that ministry. If you are not in a church, I’d encourage you to find a charity that you feel like you can support. I don’t know how it works, but people who are generous seem to be on the receiving end of God’s blessings.
