Boasting in the Cross?

Today is known as “Good Friday” in the Christian World. Isn’t that an interesting thing to call the day on which Jesus was crucified? I think it would be more accurate to call it “Black Friday.” This was a dark day, spiritually and physically. How can we call the day that our Savior died “good?”

The Apostle Paul took it a step further. He said that he actually boasted in the cross of Christ. “They don’t want to be persecuted for teaching that the cross of Christ alone can save…As for me, may I never boast about anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Who in their right mind would want to “boast” about the cross? The cross represented weakness. The cross represented oppression. The cross represented death.

For those who see it through the eyes of faith, however, the cross represents a chance to start over. To start clean. To start fresh, forgiven. Paul understood that he could never save himself or do enough good deeds to earn God’s forgiveness. The cross has become the bridge that re-connects us back to God.
