Book Excerpt- Street Cop II: Reloaded

In anticipation of the soon upcoming release of Street Cop II: Reloaded, I wanted to give you a little taste. Let me know what you think! Today’s excerpt is from the chapter, “Drunk Drivers.”

Another night, I got behind a large black Cadillac Eldorado near Buford. This was one of those cars that was about half a block long. It was driving shoulder to shoulder on that particular two lane stretch of Peachtree Industrial Boulevard. Thankfully, there was no other traffic on the road. The Eldorado was speeding up and slowing down as it weaved all over the road.

When my blue lights came on, the car accelerated like it was going to run, but then, just as suddenly, the driver slammed on the brakes and skidded to a stop in the middle of the road. The driver was a middle-aged black guy. I could smell the alcohol as I walked up to the open driver’s window. Leon was a very personable drunk. I asked him where he was going.

“Well, you see, Officer, I was at my girlfriend’s house. Now, I am trying to get home before my wife finds out that I was gone.”

“I can smell the booze, sir. How many beers have you had tonight?” I asked.

Leon turned his nose up and looked offended. “I don’t drink beer, Officer. I only drink bourbon. I have had a few sips tonight.”

Leon agreed to take some Field Sobriety Tests. He failed all of them but he was not as bad as some impaired drivers that I had seen. When he took the breath test at the jail, though, the results indicated that he was at .29 grams. This is over three times the legal limit. Talking to Leon, he did not seem that drunk. His driving, however, and the sobriety tests were the indicators that he was intoxicated. He was evidently a serious drinker to be able to function at .29 grams. I do not know whether or not Leon’s wife ever found out about his girlfriend or if his girlfriend ever found out about his wife.
