Doing What is Right in Our Own Eyes

“In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.” (Judges 21:25)

The Book of Judges records the darkest period in Israel’s history after Joshua died. Joshua had succeeded Moses in leading the young nation. Joshua was the one who led them into their Promised Land. He was a great leader but he made one glaring mistake. He did not prepare a successor as Moses had done with him. Read more about that here.

After Joshua’s death, there was a leadership vacuum. “And the people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord and served the Baals. And they abandoned the Lord, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt. They went after other gods, from among the gods of the peoples around them, and bowed down to them. And they provoked the Lord to anger.” (Judges 2:11-12)

It is not hard to see the parallels in our time. Everyone is doing what is right in their own eyes. Around the world their seems to be a real lack of moral leadership. This is not the time for the Church to draw back. This is the time for the Church to proclaim the Truth like never before.

With the upcoming Presidential election in the United States, this is the time to pray for America like never before. No matter which side of the political fence you come down on, I think we can all agree that we need to pray for our country. Jesus told us to pray, “Your Kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” Can we join together and pray for God’s will to be done in our country? Can we join together and ask for his will to be done as we choose a leader for the United States?

If you have not read the Old Testament book of Judges in a while, I would challenge you to read it. It is a morbidly fascinating account of what happens when a nation removes God from their society and does what is right in their own eyes. My our eyes be opened before it is too late.
