Praying with Paul

“When I think of the wisdom and scope of God’s plan, I fall to my knees and pray to the Father, the Creator of everything in heaven and on earth. I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will give you mighty inner strength through his Holy Spirit so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.” (Ephesians 3:14-21)

Do you ever have trouble praying? Sometimes just getting started in my morning prayer time can be difficult. The passage above is a prayer that the Apostle Paul prayed for the church in Ephesus. All of Paul’s written chats with God are amazing. Paul’s prayers are a great tool to jump start our own prayer time. I find that by praying along with the apostle can be a great way to find my voice in communicating with God.

The part of this prayer that always jumps off the page at me is his reference to God’s “glorious, unlimited resources.” My resources are not glorious and they are definitely limited! Paul is not looking at his own talent or bank account. He is tapping into God’s eternal resources that we have access to, as well.

If you are looking for a new way to approach your time with God, why don’t you make this prayer yours for the next week or so? In fact, I would challenge you to find all of the prayers that Paul prayed for his churches. Incorporate these prayers into your time with God and see what the Holy Spirit might say to you. I figure if they were good enough for the Apostle Paul, they are good enough for me!
