“The Lord kept his word and did for Sarah exactly what he had promised. She became pregnant, and she gave birth to a son for Abraham in his old age. This happened at just the time God had said it would.”

The laughter and joyful chatter surrounded Abraham and Sarah as their friends and family came to see their baby. What a miracle! Abraham was one hundred years old and Sarah was ninety, but somehow, God had enabled them to have a child. All they could do now was to laugh and cry for joy.

Sarah’s laughter was originally that of unbelief. She had laughed to herself at the thought of having a baby at her age. She had said, “How could a worn-out woman like me enjoy such pleasure, especially when my master- my husband- is also so old?” Surely God had made a mistake when He had promised them a baby twenty five long years earlier.

Sarah and Abraham had learned that God always keeps His promises. It took a long time and their faith wasn’t always perfect. They wondered if God had forgotten them. Yet, as they held their baby son and laughed with joy, all the difficult times and trials were forgotten. In their joy, they could not even remember their previous pain. Laughter has a way of healing it.

God had taken this incredible couple on a long journey of faith. It wasn’t quite over yet, as we will see next time. What Abraham and Sarah had learned, though, was that the journey was as important as the destination. It is on the journey that God does His deepest work in our lives.

What are some of the promises that God has fulfilled in your life? What are some that you are still holding onto in faith?
