Without a Trace or Leaving our Mark?

I don’t know about you, but when I read those words something leaps inside me. I know Steve Jobs was talking about leaving a mark in the context of Apple’s revolutionary technology. And he did. Half the families in the United States have at least one Apple product. But when I see those words, I can’t help but to think of eternal things.

On another occasion, Jobs was trying to woo the President of PepsiCo to come work for him early in Apple’s history. Jobs could see that the man was wavering. Should he leave a successful career for the unknown? Steve Jobs saw that the Pepsi president was having trouble making up his mind and delivered the knockout punch: “Do  you want to spend the rest of your life selling sugared water or do you want a chance to change the world?” Needless to say, Jobs got his man.

Apple has blessed us with some incredible tools and toys. In the end, however, only what is eternal will last. God has given His people the awesome responsibility of advancing His Kingdom here on earth. Every life changed by the power of God leaves a mark. Together, we can put a dent in the universe. In fact, that was God’s plan all along.

Look at Paul’s prayer in Ephesians: “I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will give you mighty inner strength through his Holy Spirit. And I pray that Christ will be more and more at home in your hearts as you trust in him. May your roots go down deep into the soil of God’s marvelous love. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love really is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is so great you will never fully understand it. Then you will be filled with the fullness of life and power that comes from God. Now glory be to God! By his mighty power at work within us, he is able to accomplish infinitely more than we would ever dare to ask or hope.” 

The Apostle Paul really did put a dent in the universe. He understood that we have a power that is greater than any earthly power working in and through us. God has given us His Holy Spirit to fill us and shake the heavens!
